I want to start an online home business selling second hand books. Its more of a hobby then anything, just to make a little extra cash. Do I need to register a name and ABN and stuff with the government? Thanks!

      Answer2:Unless you are making over a certain amount of money, you shouldnt need to. Registering your name may be required if you are going to operate under one that isnt literally your own name. If you do bring in over 25,000.00 (I believe- you may want to double check on the amount) then you will need to register for a GST (goods and services tax); which is a value added tax on your goods and services. In order to file for one, you will need to register for an ABN.Incorporating is an option, but again, based on what youre saying, dont think the financial output is really validated by what youll earn- incorporating can protect you from being sued by unhappy customers; open the door to additional tax deductions as a small business, and also offer you ongoing support form your incorporation agent- but it can be costly and not always seen as a necessary thing.As for the business itself; I dont mean to sound negative, but right now book merchants are going out of business in droves due to large corporate chains and the advent of the internet. I would suggest looking into some options online, like selling on Ebay; and even contacting Amazon and Abe books, to see how they acquire their affiliate sales- in which case, you will most likely also need an ABN.Having both of those things is a benefit, in the sense that you will have the right to claim more deductions, but you may also financially be better off just completing a w-9 and claiming them there if you are not expecting to exceed 25K.I hope this helps a little-best of luck!
