Family Card Business

Im thinking of starting a greeting card business with my mother in law, and I want your opinion on this. Do you think a card making business will work in this economy? Art is something we both enjoy doing, and is all Im good at. Right now, Im almost jobless, and I just cannot imagine working for yet another boss. My days are numbered, and so is hers. We need to make some money in order to survive. I have my doubts about the business, and I dont have much confidence we can pull in enough money to pay for the bills and mortgage.Do you think this business will work? I dont have a car so its difficult for me to commute. My current job is within a walking distance, so I dont know how I can commute to my next job. Thats why I need to do something at home or within my neighborhood. If youre in this business or something similar, whats your advice?p/s: My relationship with my mother in law is very good, so no worries about that.
Answer1:I would go with something that is in huge need! With the way the econemy is. I wish you luck though!
Answer2:A lot of business can do well. If you have artistic ability, dont limited to just greeting cards. Why not do business cards, thank you cards, and poster design as well? Brainstorm and think of all things you can do graphically. You can offer more than one service. You also should have a target market and a way of reach them. It could be a small shop in town or you could sell your cards online and have them shipped. Price them competevily and promote them well. Find ways to make yourselfs known. For example, offer a business to create their business cards and make it somehow better than a competition. Work out a deal with a local bakery that each time a birthday cake is sold, they have an option of buying a card. Maybe the bakery gets a small percent if the card is sold.A business plan can also serve two help you guys organize yourselfs.My-Lan Web Design & Consultinghttp://webdesign.my-lan.us/
Answer3:Graphic Design is dead. I was working in the field for 16 years. Im also a pre-press production artist and graphic designer. I can not stress enough to get out of the design field. If you want to do the card business go for it. Remember that you will need print run coasts for your designs. Then you will need to purchase the envelopes for the cards. Check out designerstoolbox.com for templates. What you should focus on is a web based greeting card business with the option to send out printed cards. For holidays, like xmas you can do larger print runs of your work and sell them on your web page but make sure those designs have sold.I would avoid a business strickly on the print aspect.
