i want to open an online business. either my own or on ebay.im little curious on the tax and fees i have to pay on a item i sell. i want to know which is cheaper to trade with. im famililar with the ebay fees(listing fees & final value fees), but i need more info on whether i need to pay any tax or VAT if i sell on ebay. likewise the same on my own online store.thank you for all you answers

Are you certain you are going to make it big time!Using eBay there is very high competition (i.e things sell cheaply) but nil setting up costs and established payment method (PayPal) etc. Overall the charges are a lot less then the capital investment you need to put in upfront doing it yourself! Typically I sold something for £16 over the weekend, it cost £1.04 in charges! We all moan about eBay charges but honestly you get a good deal!EBay is a good way to test the market!       Answer4:I have never have had to collect tax when selling on line. If you are a business with resale certificates you may want check with an accountant. I believe in New York where I am from I would be responsible for sales tax.Joseph;MBA
      Answer5:You are going to have to pay taxes either way. eBay is beneficial because it has a lot of traffic already where with a website, you would have to work on getting the traffic to you. It depends on your product too. You should test both, it costs so little to do both, just give it a try.
