Starting a record store
Answer1:There is certainly a market for rare and collectible vinyl. However, just about every record store Ive seen and actually liked patronizing has gone out of business in short order. If you are thinking of doing one over the Internet you might have better luck, as you wont have the high overhead associated with rent and building maintenance. If you plan to open a brick-and-mortar store, you will definitely want to sell other products to bring people in. How about concert shirts and posters, instruments, etc.?One store I liked sold a lot of used CDs and specialized in newer music by local bands that were up and coming. It acted as sort of a clearing house for concert news and the local music community, where to rent studio time, etc. All the local musicians and their fans passed through the doors. I think a store like that would work in an area with an active local music scene, or in a college or tourist town.Whatever you do, find your niche and stick with it. Youll get a lot of word-of-mouth advertising if folks believe in what youre doing.
